Question I have a pattern for a kitten bonnet using Paton's fuzzy wuzzy yarn. Made it years ago for my children. I cannot find the yarn and think it has been discontinued. Do you know of a substitute yarn? Thanks
Answer Yes, you can easily sub yarns. You need to know what classification of thickness the original yarn is. The basic thickness or weight could be DK (double knit) , worsted wt, bulky, or super bulky. There are also thinner yarns such as fingering wt. or lace wt.
If the gauge is given for the pattern you can decipher the weight that way.3 1/2 stitches per inch is bulky wt., 5 stitches per inch is worsted wt. ,5 1/2 stitches per inches is DK. A yarn shop can help you sub any pattern.
I googled the yarn you mentioned and it looks like it's on the lighter end of a DK wt.The yarn is discontinued. The pattern I found has it at 6 1/2 sts. per inch on a US6 needle. That would be a sport wt., but it's hard to find sport wt. yarns now. DK wt. is more common and might work if you use slightly smaller needles, like 4 or 5.
It is angora or an angora blend.
Comes in a small ball. I carry a DK wt. angora in my shop (Schulana Angora) it comes in 25 m ( 27 yd) balls at $13.95 per ball.
