Knitting - changing a pattern from knitting straight to knitting in the round
Expert: susan wills - 11/7/2009
Question my question is how to adapt a baby hat pattern with instructions for knitting on straight needles to be knitted in the round. it has a 92 inch cast on and i assumed just casting on 90 stitches would be better to account for it not needing to be sewn up. But the problem i am having is how to adjust the decreases when i'll be working with two less stitches.
Answer Just use the 92 stitches and work in the round. Then you won't need to refigure the decreases.
If the hat is worked in some stitch pattern, you'll need to refigure things: determine the pattern multiple and then cast on a multiple of that number. For refiguring the decreases, take the number of decrease in the first dec. row of the original pattern and divide that into your number of stitches to determine how often to do the decreases for the first rnd. Usually then it's one less stitch between decreases e.o.r. You might need to fudge numbers slightly, depending on how big a multiple you're working with .
