Knitting - Changing ply

Expert: Deborah Mason - 5/23/2009

Question
I want to knit a helmet in 5 ply wool for 12 month grandaughter. My best pattern in 8 ply. How do I change instructions to cater for this? Thanks, Chris

Answer
Probably the easiest way to do it is to knit the helmet in a larger size and adjust for length.  The normal tension for 8 ply is about 22 stitches and 30 rows per 10 cm, whereas a 5 ply is 26 stitches and 35 rows per 10 cm.

So look at the measurements for each of the sizes in the pattern, divide them by 2.6 and multiply by 2.2 to find the one that is closest in measurement to the size you want the finished article to be.  When you find one that is reasonably close, knit that size on the needles you would normally use for 5 ply (3.75mm).
