Knitting/What does alternate row mean?

Question
I am working on the armhole shaping for a sweater with set-in sleeves. For the
back the pattern reads "Dec1 st at each end of next 5 rows, then on the
following 4 alt rows, then on every following 4th row." What do they mean by 4
alternate rows? Every other row, every 4th row, or multiples of 4?

Answer
Hi Alexis.

Thanks for your question.

Usually "the following 4 alternate rows" would mean every other row, 4 times. (ie, on the next 8 rows, decrease on rows 2,4,6,& 8).

I hope that this makes sense, but if you have any further questions, please let me know.

Thanks again

Expertise

I can answer questions on all types of knitting on needles (ie not loom or machine knitting) including Fairisle, intarsia, lace and basic knitwear design. I can also answer on crochet, including tapestry crochet, but I do not have sufficient knowledge of toys or stuffed animals to call myself an expert.

Experience

I've been knitting and crocheting for over 35 years. In that time I have made a variety of items, incorporating a range of stitch techniques and have designed my own garments. I have had patterns published in the UK (crochet and knitting) and teach both crafts.
