Knitting - knitting question

Expert: susan wills - 6/9/2009

Question
Hi Susan,

I found a blanket I really like and would like to attempt. This is the pattern:

Gauge: 18 sts and 22 rows = 4 ins 10 cm with larger needles in stocking st.

Stitch Glossary:
T4F = Slip next st onto cable needle and leave at front of work. K3, then K1 from cable needle.
T4B = Slip next 3 sts onto cable needle and leave at back of work. K1, then K3 from cable needle.

Measurements: Approx 44 x 51 ins 112 x 129.5 cm.

Instructions:

Panel A (make 3).
With smaller needles and MC, cast on 30 sts.
Work 7 rows in garter st (knit every row), noting 1st row is WS.

Change to larger needles and proceed as follows:
1st row: (RS). K5. (K1. P1. K1) all in next st. K3togtbl. Rep from to last 5 sts. K5.
2nd row: Knit.
3rd row: K5. K3togtbl. (K1. P1. K1) all in next st. Rep from to last 5 sts. K5.
4th row: As 2nd row.
Rep last 4 rows until work from beg measures 49½ ins 125.5 cm, ending with RS facing for next row.

Change to smaller needles and knit 7 rows. Cast off knitwise (WS).

Panel B (make 4).
With smaller needles and A, cast on 25 sts.
Work 7 rows in garter st, noting 1st row is WS.

Change to larger needles and proceed as follows:
1st row: (RS). K6. P2. K9. P2. K6.
2nd and alt rows: K5. P1. K2. P9. K2. P1. K5.
3rd row: As 1st row.
5th row: K6. P2. T4B. K1. T4F. P2. K6.
6th row: As 2nd row.
Rep last 6 rows until work from beg measures 49½ ins 125.5 cm, ending with RS facing for next row.

Change to smaller needles and knit 7 rows. Cast off knitwise (WS).

Beg with Panel B, sew alt panels tog using flat seam.

Fringe: Cut 12 ins 30.5 cm lengths of MC and A. Taking 3 strands of appropriate color tog, knot into fringe along cast on and cast off edges. Trim evenly.

MY QUESTIONS:
- for panel A it says to "(K1,P1,K1) all in the same stitch". How do you do that?

-There are instructions for using a cable needle but in the pattern I can't find where you actually use one. Do you think this is a mistake?? Thanks for your time

Answer
With yarn in back, knit into stitch but do not slip it off the left needle, move yarn to front between the two needles and purl into the same stitch but do not slip it off the left needle, move yarn to back between the two needles and knit again into the same stitch. Now slip the stitch off the left needle. You have increased 2 sts.
You use a cable needle when performing the T4F and T4B in every 5th row of Panel B.
