About Lesley Arnold-Hopkins
Expertise
I can answer questions on all types of knitting on needles (ie not loom knitting) including Fairisle, intarsia, lace and basic knitwear design. I can also answer on crochet, including tapestry crochet, but I do not have sufficient knowledge of toys or stuffed animals to call myself an expert.

Experience
I've been knitting and crocheting for over 35 years. In that time I have made a variety of items, incorporating a range of stitch techniques and have designed my own garments. I have had patterns published in the UK (crochet and knitting) and teach both crafts.

Knitting - understanding knitting instructions

Expert: Lesley Arnold-Hopkins - 6/20/2009

Question
Dear Lesley,
I'm knitting a jacket and for the sleeves, the knitting pattern intructs:
"..begin with knit row, work in st st and inc one st at each end of the 3rd and every foll 4th row until..."
So - what I don't understand is when to increase - every 3rd and 4th row or every 3rd and 7th row?
Thank you so much in advance!
Best regards,
Ayelet Jospe

Answer
Hi Ayelet,

Thanks for your question.

It is a bit confusing, but I think it's telling you to increase on the 3rd row, and then every 4th row after that. So I would increase on rows 3, 7, 11, 15 etc, until you get to the number of stitches required.

If this is unclear, or it doesn't make sense in terms of the shape of the sleeve, please come back to me.

Many thanks

Lesley
