About Vinette de Phillipe Expertise Am able to help with altering patterns, substituting yarns and finding resources on the internet for both kniting and crochet.
Experience I have been knitting ang crocheting for over 40 years. I have taught many classes in both here in the States and while overseas in Greece.
Question Dear Vinette, my pattern calls for "chunky" and I want to use worsted in its place. If I do so, would I still use the same needle sizes for the worsted as called for in the "Chunky" pattern? (hope that makes sense). (I'm going to try your yarn substitute chart and hope I can do the math!)
Answer HI Joyce,
If you use the same needle size, you will get a very loose knit. You will want to use smaller needles and recalculate the number of stitches needed to get the same size.
Here is the formula I use when changing yarn, or size of the item.
The following formula works when the gauge you knit is different from the gauge in the pattern, or you want to make a different size garment, or use a different type of yarn.
The first thing to check is your gauge against the gauge in the pattern.
If the pattern gauge is 4 st to the inch, divide the 4 into the number of stitches the pattern says to cast on, lets say 60
60 divided by 4 = 15, that is the number of inches the pattern needs.
So if the size needed is 20 inches, multiply that times the number of stitches 20 x 4 = 80 st to cast on for the different size.
do this for all the measurements, chest, arm, neck, etc.
This is the basic formula that I use all the time when using yarn or a gauge that is different from the pattern or to make a different size item.
hope this helps and is clear enough to understand.
