Knitting - yarn tension alternatives

Question
Hi Deb, I have a terrific sweater pattern with tension 24 sts to 4", and 34 rowsto 4", knitted on size 5 needles. Obviously an USA pattern! Could you please me as to the equivalent tension for 10cms and mm needles? Is there an Auzzie equivalnet yarn to Berroco Comfort DK ? This is a great pattern for girls with boobs who love jeans. Even Trinny & Susan would agree. Thanks,
Cher

Answer
Hi Cher,

I did a quick search for Berroco Comfort DK and it seems to be an 8 ply.  This is from the specs on one of the stores I found selling this yarn:

KNITTING GAUGE:
6 sts = 1" on #5(US)
24 sts & 34 rows = 4" (10cm)

NEEDLE SIZES:
#5(US)/3.75mm

4 inches is roughly 10 cm (10.16 to be exact).  The normal tension for an 8 ply is 22 sts to 30 rows over 10 cm, but you would normally use 4.00mm needles.  The tension for this yarn is based on using 3.75mm needles so you would expect the number of stitches and rows to be slightly higher.

So you could substitute any Australian 8 ply and the pattern should work okay.  It might be a good idea to do a tension square first though just to be sure.

Regards,
Deb
