Question
how can i use a pattern that calls for 4ply yarn & i want to use 3ply yarn?

Answer
Check the original pattern for gauge.  You could try using larger needles and see if you can match the original gauge without the fabric getting too loose.  Or you could knit a sample using the 3 ply, (about 4 inches by 4 inches) and measure that new gauge and redo the charting.  For example, if the original 4 ply gauge was 5 rows to the inch and you needed a piece 10 inches long you would need to knit 50 rows using 4 ply yarn.  However if the new gauge with 3 ply yarn measured 7 rows to the inch you would need to knit 70 rows to get the required 10 inches.  Draw a little outline of the item you are doing, put in the original figures required for 4 ply yarn and then do the math to change to 3 ply.  Hope this helps.
