Question
Hi,

I'm new to knitting and I'm having trouble with square brackets [ ]

For example, my pattern starts off with 'cast on 42 [60:78]'

Another example within the pattern is: 'cast off 2 [2:2] sts at beg of next 8 [12:16] rows.

Any help would be much appreciated!

P.s. I'm knitting a jumper/sweater for a dog.

Answer
Cast on 42 [60 : 78] would mean
cast on 42 stitches for a size small
cast on 60 stitches for a size medium
cast on 78 stitches for a size large

cast of 2 [2:2] etc means

for a size small, cast off 2 stitches at the beginning of the next 8 rows

for a size medium, cast off 2 stitches at the beginning of the next 12 rows

for a size large, cast off 2 stitches at the beginning of the next 16 rows
