How to Know if He/She Really Likes You - guy i used to like... now?

Question
Hey, I'm Cassie and I'm 14

So basically there's this guy called Charlie who I've known for ages and been
friends with for a few months now. We started working out together in the gym
because we were both recovering from injuries and weren't ready to go back to
sport a few months ago. It was just him and me, and for the first few sessions
things were pretty quiet. Then we started talking. I liked the look of him, so I
was flirting a lot - and he was being really friendly but i wasn't quite sure if
he liked me back.

Anyway, so we both went back on sport and by this time I had the biggest crush
ever on him, I spent every opportunity I could at break talking to him - even
though my friends don't really like him because he's a bit of an emo. I like
that in him. So eventually I got his number, and I started texting him like
crazy. It wasn't every night, and usually our conversations were pretty short
and really late at night. He only ever replied to me three times before he
stopped, and then there wasn't even a goodbye or anything.

So one night a while later I got this dodgy phone call supposedly from him,
asking me out. I was a bit suspicious of it all because it didn't really sound
like him, and whenever he called it wasn't on his phone - but when he texted it
was. And when he texted, it wasn't like he was typing. he ALWAYS uses full words
and everything, and suddenly he was using text language. But I got myself really
worked up about it, and then he texted me and said he was sorry but his mates
had stolen his phone and he'd just found out what they'd done. he even got them
to call me to apologise.

We didn't talk for weeks after that, even though I got over it pretty quick.
Now, we're just beginning to talk again and my friends have been talking behind
my back about how he never smiles around anyone else but me, and how he always
watches me when I walk away and all that. but I've gotten over him. I still like
him, but I don't think I fancy him anymore. Should I trust my friends or just
leave it, because at the moment I'm kind of confused about who I do like and
whether or not charlie likes me.

i really hope you can help, thanks

Answer
Dear Cassie,

You're right, this would be very confusing for you!! On one hand it would seem like he doesn't like you because of his extremely short texts. On the other hand, he might if what your friends say is true. Why are you mad at him? He didn't know that his friends took his phone and called you, but he made them apologize right? So at least he cares what you think of him and didn't want to upset you. Were you just embarassed? Did you say yes when his friend asked you out? Emos are hard to read, but they are passionate. Hmm, if you think that you've known him for long enough and he might like you, then you could ask HIM out. Or you could ask him about how he feels about you. Hope this helped!
