Question QUESTION: hello,
I am a nursing student and I keep coming across a lab that I can not find an answer to, I have now had 2 pts that have excessive amounts of B12 in their blood tests. Our hospital ranges go to 911 and these test results are as high as 1300. When I ask my teachers they have different answers and this pt does not have end stage renal disease and is not receiving injections or a vitamin supplement.
help!
ANSWER: Hi Jayme. High B12 levels are fairly uncommon. I don't see that many at the hospital I work at. From what I know, high B12 levels can be seen in liver and kidney disease, alcoholism, chronic granulocytic leukemia, acute myeloblastic leukemia, acute promyelocytic leukemia, myelosclerosis, chronic lymphatic leukemia
carcinomatosis, polycythaemia rubra vera, and non-leukaemic leucocytosis.

QUESTION: So neither one of my pts have had any of those problems. They have all had normal WBC counts.
Answer Hi Jayme. I'm at a loss then! Like I said, we don't see very many high B12 levels where I work. Are you under the supervision of a doctor? Have they offered any insight?
