Subject: AST/GOT lab test results

Question
I had a blood screening test done through my school district and when I got the results back I had a really high level under the AST/GOT the normal range was 2-50, mine was 187.  What does that mean...?  Are their symtoms I would have with those high levels?  Could it be a false positive test due to something else?  And should I call my doctor?

Answer
Hi Amber, I'd be glad to try and answer your question.  Your AST level is high.  AST is a liver enzyme.  Very high levels of AST (more than 10 times the highest normal level, which yours is not) are usually due to acute hepatitis, often due to a virus infection. A shot or injection of medicine into muscle tissue, or even strenuous exercise, may increase AST levels. In rare instances, some drugs can damage the liver or muscle, increasing AST levels. This is true of both prescription drugs and some “natural” health products. I believe that this high ALT as least warrants a call to your doctor.  Tell your doctor about all the drugs and health products you are taking.  If you're having no symptoms, I wouldn't worry too much, but I do believe you need further testing.  Good luck.

Samantha
