Question Hi, I recently went for my annual physical and got my fasting blood report. In that, the platelet count shows 446 k/ul (normal range is 142 -400) and HCT is 35.7% (normal range is 36 - 50) The doctor has mentioned that it is ok. And, I got my period the day after the test. I was just a little bit concerned about this and I couldnt get much information on the net about this and if the menstrual cycle has any relation with the platelet count. And, I recently started getting my period after having my baby and 18 months of breast feeding.
Thanks. Would really appreciate a response
Answer Hi Julia, I'd be glad to try and answer your question. When your platelet count is a little elevated, and your hemocrit (HCT) is a little low, this could indicate iron deficiency anemia, but not always. But your HCT is only slightly low. The menstrual cycle doesn't really affect the platelet count, but could affect your HCT. As long as youe don't have any symptoms, and your results are not terribly abnormal, I wouldn't worry.
Samantha
