Question I had a slightly elevated RA Factor (RA Latex Turbid) of 14.7 reference range 0-13.9
NP wants me to go to specialist of course ANA- neg, sed rate 3mm,.
Waited almost a month before going to NP with stiffness, body aches, and great fatigue. I just wonder if this is high enough to drive 2 hrs to see a rheumatologist in Jan. 2010.
When I don't have medical insurance????
Thank You
Sharon
Answer Hi Sharon. Of course, I cannot tell you whether or not to go tothe rhuematologist for sure. But I can give you some information regarding a positive RA test. A positive RA test such as yours does not ALWAYS mean a person has RA. Positive RF test results may also be seen in healthy patients and in patients with conditions such as: endocarditis; systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus); tuberculosis; syphilis; sarcoidosis; cancer; viral infection; or disease of the liver, lung, or kidney. The RF test is not diagnostic or specific. It must be interpreted in conjunction with the patient’s symptoms and history to make a diagnosis of RA, Sjögren’s syndrome, or another condition. Also, the frequency of false positive RF results increases with age. You mentioned that your sed rate is 3 mm/hr. This is a normal result. In moderate or severe RA, the sed rate is usually elevated. You'll have to decide whether or not the severity of your symptoms warrants the 2 hour trip and not having insurance. Hope this helps! Good luck.
Samantha
