Question
One time when I went to donate they tested my urine and wouldn't take my blood because they said I had too much protein in my urine.  Is there any way to test this with an over the counter type kit?  What does it mean?  How can I make sure the problem has been corrected before I donate again?

Answer
akamusic,

You can buy test strips at your local pharmacy that will detect protein in your urine. They are usually found with the diabetic testing supplies. If you ask the pharmacist, he or she will be able to show you where they are.

It's hard to say why protein was found in your urine. Sometimes people end up with protein in their urine because they are under severe emotional stress. Other times, it's because they have exercised strenuously, or they had an x-ray with an injectable dye within 3 days of the urine test. If the person is a woman, protein can be found in urine due to contamination with vaginal secretions. Lastly, several disease states can cause protein in the urine.

You could go to the pharmacy and buy some test strips and test your urine. If you find protein in your urine, you should call your doctor to find out if you need to make an appointment. You could also just call your doctor and find out what he/she wants you to do.
