Lacrosse - goalie head

Expert: Jonathan Edwards - 6/28/2009

Question
I play at the intense middle school level in Rhode Island but will soon be moving on to high school and i want a reliable head. I have an eclipse with soft mesh and two hockey laces strung through the top. The mesh seems to be braking and I've heard that hard mesh is more reliable and durable.I don't have an offseason though and I'm worried that if i get hard mesh i will have a hard time breaking it in.Are there any suggestions you have about what i should string it with and how to brake it in.

Answer
Kate you just need to pound the heck out of the hard mesh.  I also soak it prior to stringing it and then put a weight in it so it dries overnight in the stretched position.  You want to be using hard mesh.  Soft mesh shrinks up too much.  It's great when it's brand new but when it gets wet and then dries forget it.

The biggest tip I can give any goalie is to have two sticks on the go at all times. You have your A-game stick.  And you have a second stick that you use at practice and at warm ups.  This way if something goes wrong with one you have a back up to go to that you are comfortable with and that is broken in.

Hope that helps Kate.  Let me know what you decide.  Also, that Eclipse is perfect. I've got three of them and they are my favorite stick.
