I read your 2007 e-mail response on the topic of girls playing boys lacrosse and found it very interesting. Are there any updates on the possibilities? I have a daughter that is interested in playing. Will girls lacrosse ever adopt boys rules and equipment?
Thank you,
Frank
Answer Hey there Frank, thanks for writing. I don't see the girls game ever adopting boys rules. In my opinion there are too many girls who like to play the girls game as it stands. It's a great game, and fun to watch even without the checking you see in the boys game.
In womens' hockey for instance checking is illegal (although it still does happen at the higher level.) This rule was put in place so that girls of varying size could still compete. If you have a smaller, skilled girl who is unable to physicall withstand getting checked by a larger girl you eventually force the smaller girls out of the game. Not my rule. It was just the though process going into that decision for hockey. Now I'm as big a cheerleader for the smaller skilled players to out skill and out play the larger more physically dominating player. But, especially at the high school level, I just don't see it working effectively. You would probably lose so many skilled, yet smaller girls that the game would change quite significantly.
But as you read in that other article that I wrote, I would still encourage your daughter to go out for the boys team. Just be prepared for the struggle. I wish you guys luck and keep me posted on what you decide. You can always reach me on my blog at www.LacrosseGoalieTips.com
