Question Hello, my 1994 pre update 3.9 v8i Disco has given me grief for over 4 years. It takes about 20 seconds of cranking before it fires up. I have replaced the starter motor, coolant temp sensor, fuel sensor, battery, fuel filter, rotor, dizzy cap, leads, ignition coil and spark plugs. I have taken the car to several different mechanics and auto electricians but the problem persists. I have spark, compression and fuel. The engine has also been rebuilt. The vehicle stinks of fuel especially on start up.
I am now considering replacing the fuel pressure regulator...
This problem occurs when the car has been left for 15minutes plus. It starts perfectly when hot like just after filling up or left to sit for about 3+ days.
I am out of ideas and hoping you can assist me please.
Answer The fuel pressure regulator sounds like a good culprit, next time you start up cold you can test it by turning the key to run without cranking. Let the fuel pump run for about 20 sec (to simulate the cranking time), if it fires-right up then the regulator is likely letting pressure bleed off when sitting or not building up pressure fast enough.
