Land Rover Repair - '04 RR telescoping mechanism

Expert: John Robison - 11/1/2009

Question
Today, I inadvertently switched on the hill descent while the vehicle was off (I was wiping up a small spill), but I didn't know for sure.  A few minutes later, I started the car and drove approx. 3 blocks before the vehicle starting doing something weird.  I saw the green hill descent light on in the dash.  I immediately pulled over and turned the car off.  That's when I noticed the telescoping feature was inactive.  I turned the HD switch back to its original position, the light went off, and I turned the car on.  The steering wheel did not move.

I am not sure if these problem is related to the HD or if it is isolated.  Nonetheless, I would like to know if you have any suggestions to get my  steering wheel to move again? If there is no simple fix and I do need a motor, do you have any idea how much they run?  OR if the recall is still in effect?

I know that's alot of questions, but any one that you can answer would be GREATLY appreciated.  Thanks so much!!

Answer
Steering column failure is quite common.

I do not think you pushing the HDC button should lead to the failures you describe

The only real way to learn more will be to seek out a specialist with the proper test equipment to interrogate the various computers and see what's going on
