Experience Owner of a Discovery. I've had many mishaps with our Disco but I still like this vehicle. Talk to a fellow LR owner instead of a dealership rep. I'm not in this for the money. I'm just an owner who wants to help others.
Question I have a 2000 Land Rover Discovry and it is making a ticking noise and it sound as though it is coming from the engine...it also do not have much power when taking off...it has just it 103087....oil change is due in about 900 mile....can you tell me what you think may be my problem.......I want to take it in for repair however I want to go with some knowledge as to what I think it may be....

could be a problem with the sticking exhaust valve(s) that is common to Series II Disco's. Deposits buildup on the exhaust valve used to dispose of waste gas after each compression/ignition in the engine combustion cycle. That gas is forced out into the exhaust system of your Disco. As the valve opens, the deposit causes the valve to stick slightly and thus you may hear a tick with extreme cases. The most obvious symptom is loss of power, especially when the engine is hot and also on hot, humid days or driving up a steep hill.
The fix is always a complete valve job - even if only a couple of valves are bad - which can cost you upwards of $2500 at the LR dealer. An independent LR shop may charge you less, so its well worth finding one if possible.
Aftermarket fuel additives won't work. Those products usually are burned up completely in the ignition cycle, so I don't know how it could clean the deposit off.
The only other problem I can think of that can cause ticking noise is using a low grade fuel. I use super with an octane of 90 or 91. Sunoco has a 94 octane product.
