Question I have a 1999 ROVER 623GSI, with a 16 valve Honda Engine. Last year they put a new or rebuilt Honda Engine in this car. The problem is with the transmission. Only when put in reverse, in early mornings, when the engine is cold and the RPM goes above 1000 that it makes a jolting noise.
We flushed transmission refilled with fluid and treatment yet the problem persisted. What should I do, or tell my mechanic?
Answer Hi F.Natour,
I'm impressed that you got a Honda engine into the RR. My advise is to go to www.discoweb.org and post this question there. There is a Range Rover discussion board and you have the choice to post it there or in the Discovery board. Either way, you may find someone else who has overcome problems like this with engine's other than the 4.0, 4.2 or 4.6.
IF it was a straight LR engine to transmission, I'd say perhaps the inhibitor switch. I'm sure you're experienced enough to know how the tranny fluid should have looked/smelled when you replaced it. Any discoloration or odour and chances are its the entire tranny you'd have to replace.
As ask Discoweb and see if anyone with non-LR engines to ZF trannys have any peculiar failures on the tranny side. Perhaps the combo needs some special attention.
