Owner of a Discovery. I've had many mishaps with our Disco but I still like this vehicle. Talk to a fellow LR owner instead of a dealership rep. I'm not in this for the money. I'm just an owner who wants to help others.

Land Rover Repair - 98 Disco Transfer Locked

Expert: John McInnis - 5/7/2009

Question
Have a 98 Disco Series I that the transfer case is locked in high since I bought it.  116k miles.   Drives fine but would like to be able to transfer wheel power if needed.  Anything I can do on my own to troubleshoot it?  Have placed transmission in neutral and engaged emercency brake.  Then attempted to put pressure on shifter but does not want to budge.  Would like to welcome you back and say thanks up front for any advise.

Answer
Hi Jeremy,

common problem to have CDL shifter lock up if it is not used.  You can try using WD-40 from underneath to see if it will free up the shifter. Whatever you do DON'T force the shifter to move -  you'll cause more damage.

Most times it requires you to remove the center console, drill out the rivets surrounding the lever plate and then remove the CDL lever to fully lubricate it.

If cleaning and lubrication won't free it up, you'll have to replace it.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
