About John McInnis
Expertise
Land Rover Discovery. I've had most of the common mechanical failures, altenator, water leaks, wiper failure, door/hinge problems, roof rust, floor rust, loads of electrical problems. Remember, I'm not a dealer or a mechanic, just an owner like most of you.

Experience

Experience
Owner of a Discovery. I've had many mishaps with our Disco but I still like this vehicle. Talk to a fellow LR owner instead of a dealership rep. I'm not in this for the money. I'm just an owner who wants to help others.

Land Rover Repair - clutch failure

Expert: John McInnis - 7/22/2009

Question
QUESTION: Refer to my previous question regarding master cylinder failure. All the parts have been replaced right and properly bleeded. Can the cause for failure not be the pressure plate, causing to much pressure on the ruber seals in the master cylinder because of the springs becoming faulty?

ANSWER: Hi Dawie,

my advice is to post this question on www.discoweb.org and see if someone has had this problem before.  Chances are, you'll find someone who is better experienced than I am.  I will say that what you write makes sense.

Regards,

JohnMc

QUESTION: info-I have found out that the brit-replacement part I used
which is a trw part has paint in it.this re-acted with the brakefluid and over time causes the rubber seals to collapse.I am now going to redo the whole excercise, cleaning the cylinders, replace seals and try again.(sticking with my landy!)This way the seals should give at least 2 years service.

Answer
Hi Dawie,

you're a better owner for hanging in there with this LR.

I would have thought that TRW would use better quality paints.  Of course, you'll have to make sure all the paint is removed - yes?

I've never rebuilt the MC before.  Calipers yes, master C no.  I would have swapped out the MC with either a rebuilt or a salvaged one.  Its a tedious job that requires patience and confidence.  I see that you have both these qualities.

Best of luck with this and don't forget to use Discoweb.org if you have an Q's.  They even post pictures to help solve problems.

Thanks for the follow-up,

JohnMc
