Landscaping & Design - Exterior garden wall

Expert: S. D. Ward - 8/21/2008

Question
I would like to build a garden wall, just 5-6'tall, about 12'long, old brick, then apply a stucco type finish such that some areas, perhaps tinted, to emulate an "old" wall in disrepair. Are there reference books or other info available. Thanks.

Answer
Jim, I noticed that you were very unclear on my advice in helping you find a book to reference on your plan to build a wall. Please do not hesitate to follow up with me for clarification if you feel that I have not been clear on my recommendation to you.

Good day Jim!

I hope I have not been to tardy in getting back with you. I am on an extended vacation in some remote locations where Internet is not accessible, so I can not always check my e-mail as often as I would like to.

Sounds like a beautiful start of a garden by the sound of your wall. I would suggest that you visit Lowe's or Home Depot if you have those two supply stores near by. They have several great books for landscapes and exterior walls. I own several of them just for the ideas alone.

As a specification oriented book goes, Masonry Walls: Specification and Design by K. Thomas, provides a great deal of insight into proper construction specifications. You might be able to find this at your local book store or possibly online through amazon.com if you wanted to invest in such a book.

Please let me know if I can be of any further help or encouragement with your wall. And again, please forgive me for being a bit slow in getting back with you.

For your success in building the peaceful garden you seek.

Warm regards,

David Ward
