About Kathy
Expertise
I am able to answer exterior layout and design questions. I have a special talent for creating landscapes for children as well as entertaining. Going beyond the usual landscape design I can also suggest furniture and decor (lit candles, hanging pottery, etc) that will compliment any exterior design. Color themes, geographical themes (japanese, tuscany, etc) and seasonal designs are also within my realm of expertise. A horticulturalist I am not, but, I can answer just about any question that might require a particular type of plant and whether it will work for you.

Experience
Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science for SUNY-Environmental Science and Forestry in association with Syracuse University where I took 2 years of Landscape Architecture. I worked for a corporate web design/services company. I am currently a consultant for residential landscape design here in Virginia Beach.

Landscaping & Design - colour of Exterior New Doors

Expert: Kathy - 5/16/2007

Question
QUESTION: Hello we are purchasing all new exterior doors for a small old brick home.  The brick is mottled? in colour with grey reds and all inbetween and I would like to put in a shade of red for ouside doors we are not putting in screen doors but rather outside doors all glass that open partially for air in the summer.  Can you tell me if a shade of red would be too much?
Thank you,
Susan

ANSWER: I think a splash of red to pull in the various greys and reds sounds lovely....in fact, it sounds like my house!! I think 3 types of doors would look good here: red, white, or dark natural wood. Of course, I'm only going by the color of your brick and style of home. I don't know if you have color anywhere else on your home that might affect the door color, like, roof color, trim or shutters, if any.

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance :-)

QUESTION: Hello thank you for your response it really helps me as I am the one that wants the red doors.  My husband does but was not sure. If the brick was totally red I would not have even asked but there is such a varience? of colour in the red brick from reds oranges grey black the red would bring it all together and I think not a red red but a slightly different red they have at home depot and I cannot think of oh Sienna red looks lovely.  My husband was afraid of making the doorway looking to dark as we have a large full length porch in front of it. Hope you still feel the same it is a light beige but we are thinking of painting it a sage green or taupe?  Sorry I will not ask another question we have beige siding just a bit above on the second floor and on the side addition you cant really see.
Thank you so much this is a Wonderful Resourse.
Susan

Answer
The red - unless you go with a very deep, dark red - shouldn't appear dark. In fact, it is a warm color, and, therefore, will "pop-out." Is the Sienna Red a red with some brown in it? I think this sounds like a good idea since your trim is beige. If you are purchasing your paint (as well as your door) at Home Depot then you can tell me the exact colors you have in mind from the Behr website. I will be better prepared to help you with your porch color. I don't mean to give you homework, but, the more info I know the better I can assist you :-D
