AboutRosemary Lenc Expertise I am a retired Middle School teacher. I am an expert in grammar (structure of the English
language) and writing. I have been a volunteer with AOL Ask A Teacher and have
submitted many articles and special collections (one on diagramming sentences and one
with worksheets and answers so students can check their own practice on grammar skills)
to their knowledge database. I still am with them but would like other work where I can
help students with their English study. I have time to help you with this, if you want me. I
can help with grade school, middle school and high school grammar & writing and can
also look up information on literature (reading) for students and help them with it.
Please let me know if I can be of help in these areas. Thank you.

Question Hi. I am trying to help my daughter diagram the following sentence (all caps), but am not sure how to structure the diagram after the compound direct object ('apples' and 'cherries'), beginning with 'as well as.'
THE BROTHER AND HIS SISTER WENT TO THE STORE ON MAPLE STREET YESTERDAY, AND BOUGHT RED APPLES AND CHERRIES, AS WELL AS VEGETABLES FOR THE SALAD THEY MADE FOR DINNER.
Your assistance is much needed, and will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance...

Answer
Dear Erika,
First of all, the sentence you have here is a compound sentence made up 2 independent clauses.
The first one is:
The brother and his sister (compound subject) went and bought (compound verb) ....
So if you look at my website : http://members.cox.net/teachro/
and click on diagramming and then on Nouns, verbs, and interjections, a list will show up and scroll down to compound subject & predicate.
You will see how to diagram what I have listed above as the first clause.
“to the store” “on Maple street” “yesterday” should be diagrammed on 3 separate slanted lines below the verb, “went” . You will see at my site,
prepositional phrases ...click on that to see how to diagram “to the store” and “on Maple street”. “Yesterday” would be diagramed also below the verb, “went” on a slanted line (as an adverb) You will see “adverbs” diagrammed under “adverbs” as my site, if you need that to see that.
Then the second clause:
“as well as vegetables for the salad they made for dinner...”
will be diagrammed as follows:
subject: they
verb: made
prepositional phrase: for dinner (diagram under “made”
vegetables: direct object (see nouns and scrolled down to see how to diagram direct object of the verb, made.)
prepositional phrase: for the salad, would be diagrammed below, vegetables.
“as well as” is the conjunction between the two clauses and would be diagrammed as a line between the verbs: bought and made. I tried to put the diagram here but it would not transfer. So I am going to have to look at the compound-complex sentence at the end of the list under compound-complex at my site: Look how the compound part is diagrammed. That is: look at the parts there: The work stops and most of the men go home...you will see the word: "and" between stops and go. That is how you would diagram: as well as. Make the lines like "and" and then put "as well as" on the line like "and" is.
I am hoping that between my web site and the above explanation that you will see how to diagram your sentence.
If you need more help, please write again and ask where it is you need the help.
