About Rosemary Lenc
Expertise
I am a retired Middle School teacher. I am an expert in grammar (structure of the English language) and writing. I have been a volunteer with AOL Ask A Teacher and have submitted many articles and special collections (one on diagramming sentences and one with worksheets and answers so students can check their own practice on grammar skills) to their knowledge database. I still am with them but would like other work where I can help students with their English study. I have time to help you with this, if you want me. I can help with grade school, middle school and high school grammar & writing and can also look up information on literature (reading) for students and help them with it. Please let me know if I can be of help in these areas. Thank you. Rosemary Lenc

Question
Hello Rosemary!  I am 56 years of age, and pride myself on the correct use of grammar, so was horrified to see, in answer to one of the questions asked of you that, for instance, if I made the statement:  "It was given to Paul and I" . . . that would actually be incorrect!! It should actually be "Paul and  ME (or would MYSELF be equally correct? However, my main question is, are there any particular books that you could recommend please, that would refresh my memory on the why's and wherefore's of grammar construction? I have always had an absolute PASSION for words and am a voracious reader, but I need to REMEMBER WHY grammar is as it is.  Would also be very helpful in assisting my nine grandchildren as they grow older (only two at school so far), but grammar lessons do not seem to be part of the curriculum.  Even my own daughters (now aged 33/30/27) did not have the instruction my husband and I had in our primary school years.  If you can recommend any titles, it is probably better that they be aimed at primary school age, please.   Thanking you for any assistance you may be able to give . . . Rosani Sanderson.

Answer
Dear Rosani,
You are very correct in saying that I should have written "to Paul and me."  I guess we all make mistakes sometimes.  When one has an object of a preposition, one should use the objective case pronouns, me, him, her, us, them.  Thank you.
I have found several sites that really help students and all of us for that matter.
I have a web site where I have explanations and practice in parts of speech. (with answers to the practices)  I also always taught diagramming although many do not do so now. I always felt it helped the students see the relationship between the words and their functions in the sentence.  I also felt it help them when they started studying other languages.  I have that at my site also. There is a writing site there also.
Check out my web site at:

Purdue University also has help in grammar & writing.

Another site I find very helpful and interesting is a site created by a teacher that I know online.  Her site is very good for all areas of English & Literature.

Thank you for using AllExperts.
