Language Arts for Kids - Diagramming Infinitives Used as Adverb Phrases

Expert: Debra Duenas - 9/30/2008

Question
In this sentence: To do well on an exam, one should study the material over a period of several days; is the infinitive (To do well on an exam ) used as adverb phrase? If so, how would it be diagrammed?

Answer
Yes, this infinitive phrase is an adverb because it tells why one should study.

As for diagramming...it is absolutely impossible for me to do diagramming in here.  It should descend down as if it were a prepositional phrase off of study which is the verb it modifies.

Hope that helps.

Debra
