Question
Hi Debra,

This question is on the SAT OG book page 661 # 28

[In] the United States, the industrial [use of] plastics [is] greater [than steel], aluminum, and copper combined. [no error]

Why is [than steel] wrong? Isn't than used to compare the industrial use among plastics, steel, aluminum and copper?

Also I know this isn't in the question, but can you please explain the usage of whereby?

Thank you so much! You are very kind!!!

Answer
Just wanted to check on you.  As an Mom and a teacher I am glad you took a break for the weekend...be a young person a little.
How's the grammar coming??

You don't mention the correction, but I am thinking its the industrial use of plastics is greater than the use of steel.  The use of plastic can't be greater than steel...that doesn't make sense.
The use of plastics is greater than steel.  No.

The use has to be greater then the use.

In the United States, the industrial use of plastics is greater than the industrial use of steel, aluminum, and copper combined.

You have to compare like things...you cannot compare use to steel.

Whereby...
Whereby means in accordance with or through which...
It is often used in formal or legal documents.  The committee will meet and vote on the new rule whereby a decision will be made to move to the new location.

Emily...I really admire your study commitment.  I hope you will continue to study and get a great college education.  I will continue to explain as best I can, everything you need help with. BUT unless you are chinese and your father will kill you if you don't ace this test, or your father and grandfather and great grandfather all went to Harvard so you need to go to Harvard...every couple of days...go get a pizza and watch a movie or your head will explode.
