AboutRosemary Lenc Expertise I am a retired Middle School teacher. I am an expert in grammar (structure of the English
language) and writing. I have been a volunteer with AOL Ask A Teacher and have
submitted many articles and special collections (one on diagramming sentences and one
with worksheets and answers so students can check their own practice on grammar skills)
to their knowledge database. I still am with them but would like other work where I can
help students with their English study. I have time to help you with this, if you want me. I
can help with grade school, middle school and high school grammar & writing and can
also look up information on literature (reading) for students and help them with it.
Please let me know if I can be of help in these areas. Thank you.

Question The question is CAN YOU HEAR THE BAND OUTSIDE? I think THE BAND is the subject. CAN YOU HEAR OUTSIDE is the predicate? How can you figure out the subject and the predicate in a question?
Answer Dear Ryan,
Generally in a question, you can switch it so it is a statement.
Can you hear the band outside?
can be changed to:
You can hear the band outside.
Then you can find the subject and verb.
The simple subject is YOU
The simple predicate is CAN HEAR
The complete subject is YOU
The complete predicate is CAN HEAR THE BAND OUTSIDE.
Remember that even if you can't change the question to a statement, remember that the subject will be a noun or pronoun that is doing the action in the sentence. So always look for the verb, action or being verb (is, are, was, were, been, being).
The who or what did the action?
That is the noun or pronoun that is the subject of the sentence.
