Question
What is the difference between gather and collect?
Please explain it with example.

Answer
These are very close.  The often can be used in the same sentence interchangably.  But they do have slightly different meanings.

A squirrel can gather nuts or collect nuts.  In this example, either one will do.
But a boy will collect baseball cards and a taxman collects taxes.  They may gather them up if they drop them, though.
A little girl gathers up wild flowers.
A woman gathers curtains to tie them back.  You never collect up curtains to tie them back.
You gather people together.  It sounds funny to collect up people.
People collect stamps and coins, they may gather them up while doing it but the hobby is cllecting.

It's a very fine line between them.  If you mistake it, people will probably still understand you.
