The subject is what you are talking about or referring to in any sentence.

While they were out for a stroll in the beautiful park, the girl scout troop got lost.

It doesn't matter where we are (the park) or what kind of park it is (beautiful) or what kind of troop it is (girl scout)...we are still talking about one subject...The troop.
