AboutRosemary Lenc Expertise I am a retired Middle School teacher. I am an expert in grammar (structure of the English
language) and writing. I have been a volunteer with AOL Ask A Teacher and have
submitted many articles and special collections (one on diagramming sentences and one
with worksheets and answers so students can check their own practice on grammar skills)
to their knowledge database. I still am with them but would like other work where I can
help students with their English study. I have time to help you with this, if you want me. I
can help with grade school, middle school and high school grammar & writing and can
also look up information on literature (reading) for students and help them with it.
Please let me know if I can be of help in these areas. Thank you.

Question What is the subject of a sentence may be what parts of speech?
Answer Dear Stephanie,
It sounds like you are asking what parts of speech may be a subject of a sentence. Generally, one would tell you that nouns or pronouns can be subjects of a sentence. But sometimes a word that looks like a verb could also be the subject of a sentence. Look at the examples below:
Noun as a subject: The girl was sitting by the table. (girl)
Proper noun: Jane was sitting by the table.(Jane)
Pronoun: He liked the sports of soccer and football.(He)
It was a very nice day. (It)
The pronouns that can be the subject of a sentence are:
I, you, he, she, it we, they.
Then what may look like a verb can be the subject because it is the "name" of an activity:
Dancing is a great way to exercise each day. (Dancing)
Skiing can be a good winter sport. (skiing)
Hope this helps you.
Thanks for using AllExperts.
