I can answer questions specifically about Vientiane and Vang Vien, Laos. It is a fascinating country and a hidden gem of Southeast Asia!

Experience
I have backpacked from Thailand to the capital of Laos. From there I made my way up toward Luang Prabang by motorbike via the town of Vang Vien.

Answer
Dear Natalia,

I'm glad you are considering going to Laos as it's one of my favorite countries that I've visited. I must admit that I haven't made it up to Luang Prabang yet but it's definitely on my list for next time. I have many friends who have been there and they all really enjoyed it. You can see a lot of temples and interesting architecture and the city and people are pretty laid back. It's s a good place to go and relax while enjoying some sites.

There are quite a few guesthouses and places to stay there. The cheapest start at about US$2-3 a night. If you have a guidebook, they should have a few listed. If you don't have a guidebook, I can list some from mine.

You're fine with an American passport. You need a visa but it's not difficult to get. I'll assume you're going to Laos from Thailand. If you want, you can get it all arranged by a travel agent in Thailand but it'll probably be more expensive than if you did it yourself. To do it yourself, make sure you have US$30 cash and a passport photo. When you get to immigration, you'll fill out the form and pay the $30. Not too hard and that'll probably be how most travelers do it.

I've been to Vientiane and Vang Vieng, and had a wonderful time. You'll find that the people are very cool and laid back and won't hassle you at all. I'm jealous that you're going and I'm not! Hope this helps! Have a great trip!

Al
