Expertise
I can answer questions specifically about Vientiane and Vang Vien, Laos. It is a fascinating country and a hidden gem of Southeast Asia!

Experience
I have backpacked from Thailand to the capital of Laos. From there I made my way up toward Luang Prabang by motorbike via the town of Vang Vien.

Laos - Smoke in Luang Prabang

Expert: Al Slagle - 1/11/2005

Question
I have read that from feb to may luang prabang can become very smoky due to slash and burn agriculture in the hills. Apparently in march and april ( I would like to visit early march) it can be unbearable. Is this true?
If it is not can you recomend anywhere nice to stay. I would preferably like a swimming pool, and somewhere nicer than a guest house.
Thankyou

Answer
Hello. I was also in Laos in March out in the countryside. I do remember it being a little smokey but not unbearable. I'm not sure what it's like in the city though.

I don't know of anywhere that fits your description. Please keep in mind that Luang Prabang is a pretty small city and I'm not sure if there are even nicer hotels than guesthouses there.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

-Al
