Laptop Problems - Acer aspire 1691 wlmi problem

Expert: Shot - 2/18/2008

Question
Hi,
Seems like I've got a serious problem with my acer aspire 1691 wlmi, the thing is that my display goes black, like when the laptop is turned off,but the system is still running(apparently),although is not responding to any commands except a brutal shutdown.Funny thing, it never does that when running on battery but when I plug in the charger it takes a few minutes and it goes black again(not every time but let's say...7 out of 10)and mostly while playing games and such...
Any help will be greatly appreciated...I'm getting desperate here...!
Thank you,
Andrei

Answer
Hi Andrei, there's a couple of things to check, first, plug it into a regular monitor and see if it shuts down while using that instead of the regular screen. If it does, at least we can rule out the screen.

Also check the power jack on the back of the laptop. These sometimes get cracked solder connections to the main board and cause the computer to shut down. Since you said it only happens when runnin on AC power, this is a likely cause. They can be resoldered without even having to replace the jack by a local electronic repair company.
