Laptop Problems - AC Adapter?

Expert: Shot - 4/22/2008

Question
Hello,

I have a three year old Toshiba Satellite laptop (can't remember the exact series number) that recently started giving me problems. If I plug in the AC Adapter, the computer automatically shuts off after about five minutes. If I don't plug in the AC Adapter and am running solely on battery power, the laptop doesn't shut off but I can't keep it on for too long. I'm thinking that it's my AC Adapter but I'm not sure. Do you think that's what it is? What else could it be?

Thanks for the help!

Answer
Hi Albert, it could be the ac adapter. It also could be the power settings in the control panel. There are two sets, one for running on battery, one for running on AC. Might want to check those first. A third possibility is the jack on the back of the computer. They sometimes get cracked solder connections to the motherboard and then they make and break contact randomly. These can be resoldered at an electronics repair shop.

I would start by checking the power settings, then if you can find one to borrow, I would try using a different AC adapter just to make sure.
