Laptop Problems - LCD goes dim

Expert: Shot - 4/21/2008

Question
Hello, My Grand Daughter has a nice dell inspiron 1000 that has given her great service for a couple of years. just a couple of days ago the green led light on the front started blinking and the screen went dim. You still can see items on the screen but the screen is very dark. I an open and close the lid as much as 15 to 20 times and the screen comes back to the normal, until the lap top is turned off then I have to repeat the process. When the screen comes to the normal the green led on the front is not blinking any more. What do you think is causing this. The lap top has been a good one and if it is not repairable I will have to look for another one.
thank you
Jim Gator

Answer
Hi Jim, this sounds like a backlighting problem. Usually caused by the small inverter board inside the case at the lower right corner of the screen. They can be replaced, and I think the service manual available on Dell's website shows you how, but if you decide to do it yourself make sure you remove all power sources and be very careful. They run at very high voltages.
