Laptop Problems - Toshiba A85-S107 Freezing up

Expert: Shot - 4/22/2008

Question
My computer freezes randomly, even if I only have 1 window open, it is 1GB.  Here is what has been done to combat the problem.
-Rebooted the computer back to original state
-Have external drive instead of saving on computer
-Cleaned out the fan, so there is no over heating
I am running Wind. Xp, I have owned it since 04'. The only thing I have not done is change the battery, but I always leave it plug in while using. I do not know what else to do but throw the thing of the roof. Any suggestions as to why it would be freezing? Thank you!

Answer
Hi Jason, I can't say for sure yet what's causing it to freeze, could be several things, including the overheating you mentioned. To know if the CPU is overheating, you really need to run some sort of temperature monitor. Some of them are free, like SpeedFan available here http://www.softpedia.com/get/Windows-Widgets/System-Utilities/SpeedFan-Temperatu...

It could also be bad memory, or a bad hard drive. To troubleshoot those, you could download the Ultimate Boot CD from www.UltimateBootCD.com boot from the CD and run some diagnostics. That should narrow it down a bit.

Hope that helps!
