About Lauren Bennett
Expertise
I am a computer science major and my dad is an Electric Engineering, so my life has revolved around computers. For as long as I can remember, I have been buying and selling computers. I tend to travel a lot, so I have always had a laptop. I have bought 5 of them for myself, and bought around 30-40 for friends and family. I have dealt with the good and the bad of various version and brand names. If you are in need of buying a laptop, feel free to contact me and I'm sure I will be able to guide you into purchasing the laptop that will be the best fit for you. I will custom build you computers for you to choose from so you can get an exact idea of what to go and buy when you do it yourself and so that you have an exact price. However, I am in the USA and am only knowledgeable about computers here in the US. I do not know about foreign currency or the quality of computer brand names outside the US.

Laptops - What kind of laptop would be best

Expert: Lauren Bennett - 4/4/2008

Question
QUESTION: I'm a full time student and i was wondering what kind of laptop I should get? It would have to hold a lot of paper work and some music. It would also have to be very portable. I was originally going to buy a mac but someone told me they were extreamly sensitive and not very durable. What about a sony or any other kind of laptop. I would need it to last for about four years at least. What do you think would be best for my kind of situation?

ANSWER: Go with Dell.  I have been beyond pleased with all my experiences with them and they are the number one recommended laptop by colleges and universities.  They offer a 4 year warranty with on-site repair service so you can get it fixed (if it breaks) in your house, dorm, apt, etc so you never lose your laptop.  They also offer accidental damage protection so that you are still covered if you drop it or spill something on it!  This way, you are guaranteed your laptop will still be working for you 4 years down the road, no matter what happens to it!  Plus, Dell offers nice discounts to college students.

What type of budget do I have to work with here?

QUESTION: I'm willing to pay around 1200 dollars. I was thinking about getting a mac book because my school has all mac computers. What do you think of those or even the hp computers?

ANSWER: I've never been a Mac fan myself.  I can't figure out what the benefit is and why they cost so much more.  If you are doing something like architecture, graphic design, or music creation they are great.  That is what Macs are made for. If you are going for anything else, they are more of a plus than a minus.

HP computers are pretty good.  A few downfalls are that they don't have the on-site warranty repair service like Dell does, their tech support is the lowest ranked, and they tend to be a bit behind in staying up to date with technology.  They are still probably the second best way to go behind Dell though.

Which route are you thinking?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Right now based on you're opinions and what you are saying I'm leaning more towards the route o a dell or hp. The only thing is that I've heard things about Dells that would make you not want to buy them. For example I've heard they are extreamly slow sometimes and can stall a lot. What do you think are those statements true? On the other side I've also heard the same about macs because they are very sensitive about dirt and stuff. They also stall a lot. Right now I'm leaning more towards Dell or HP because of what you said and what I ve heard. I'm still debating. I guess what would be better for paper work and Microsoft tools and such?

Answer
Honestly, there isn't a huge different in terms of hardware.  They all use the same Intel or AMD processors.  And so on.. you get the point.  The hardware is the same.  What you want to look for is who is the biggest, who sells the most, who has the best tech support.  That is what truly matters.  Dell wins in all those categories.  They have given me above and beyond tech support any time I have ever needed it.  My computers are all Dell now and they all run extremely quick.
