Laptops - buying a laptop for uni

Expert: Mohammad Babaee - 7/30/2008

Question
hi there,

im currently shopping for a laptop for uni and im wondering if you could recommend one. As far as the features go, i want something light and compact, it needs to have a wireless internet connection and hopefully something with a reasonable lasting battery. Oh and the cheaper the better. It is for taking notes at uni and not much else so i dont want to be spending alot of money. I think my limit will be 700 aussie dollars. Somebody reccomended the pioneer dreambook. Is this a good choice??

Answer
Hi Natalie;

Screen size is one of the important facts in the size and weight of a notebook computer and you didn't tell me the screen size you need. I think for a case like yours, a display under 13.3" is not a good choice.
All of brand new notebooks available are powered with a WLAN.There is also a fact that the larger your screen is, the less your battery lasts.

Dell has recently announced a new laptop product line. The specs for DELL Studio 15 follows:
Processor:2 Ghz Intel Core 2 duo
Memory:2GB DDR2 DRAM
HDD: 160GB 5400rpm
slot-load drive
15.4" display
Blu-Ray
Stylish

If you want a model from Sony, I recommend SONY VAIO NR series which specs follows:
Processor:1.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 duo
Memory:2GB DDR2 DRAM
HDD: 200GB 5400rpm
15.4" display
Nice looking

These two are best choices in your price range and need.

DELL, SONY, Toshiba and HP are leaders in Laptop Computers, so when there are good choices from these manufacturers, you'd better not look for brand like Pioneer, but I will briefly DreamBook M66 which fits your price range for you:
Not a good processor with this price.
Good memory
Good Video Accelerator
No firewire

DELL XPS m1330, Sony VAIO CR series and HP dv2000 series are also good choices. You can search for specs.

After all these, the choice is yours.

>>>>Please notice that there are many configurations for a model and I mentioned one which best fits your need and budget.
