1) is a 256mb dedicated graphics card necessary for my applications? if yes how to know whether a laptop has a dedicated graphics card or integrated graphics card.
2) WHICH IS BETTER - AMD PROCESSOR OR INTEL DUAL CORE OR INTEL CORE2DUO .
3) IS IT TRUE THAT PROCESSORS WITH MORE THAN 2.3 GHz SPEED HAVE COOLING PROBLEMS?
4) SHOULD I GO FOR DELL OR ACER OR HP OR LENOVO.
styling and weight of the laptop is not a big issue with me. please advice.
ANSWER: Hi Theja;
I am really sorry for the delay in the reply.
Most laptops around 1000$ can run CATIA and Pro/E, but you have to search for those without a shared graphics memory since you need 3D acceleration.
A 256MB dedicated is not necessary, but the more the better.Integrated graphics cards are good for your work too. Some manufacturers mention that the graphics chip they use with their laptop is Dedicated or Integrated, but if you do not find it, you can call them or ask me.
Both AMD and Intel processors are good, but Intel has done more researches, invented more technologies and has produced more processors for Laptop computers. You find most laptop computers with Intel CPUs today.Personally, I prefer Intel.Intel Core 2 Duo is the bet choice for your case.
Cooling system is designed by the manufacturer and has nothing to do with the processor.Some models have cooling problems, but you can not say that models with processors with a frequency more than 2.3GHz have cooling problems.
At the first step, do not go for Acer and lenovo while there are better models available from Dell, Sony and HP.
Here are some suggestions:
1-Dell Studio 15
2-HP Pavilion dv2800 series
3-Dell Vostro 1510
Search for the above models available configurations and let me know about your choice or any questions using my mail at: mohammad[at]wmage[dot]com

QUESTION: Hai Mohammad,
Firstly thanks for your reply. It cleared a lot of doubts.
Coming to my question, I have seen 2 models in Dell laptops.
Studio 15: Pro's: 256 MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450 graphics card, 3 GB ram, 320 GB hard disk, 56 WHr lithium ion battery (6 cell).
1) Is the ATI graphics card good enough than the NVIDIA 8400m GS. Or the NVIDIA Graphics card sufficient.
2) Could you advice me on the cd/dvd drive of inspiron 1420. I have got no info about it. So your information would be valuable,
3) I am more inclined toward Inspiron 1420 as i can get it around 950$ and Studio would be around 1100$. Suggest.
ANSWER: Hi Theja;
You've found good models!
Both ATI and NVIDIA graphics cards will satisfy you, but G8400 is preferred.
Dell offers the following choices for the Inspiron 1420's Optical Drive:
-DVD/CD-RW Combo
-DVD+/-RW with Dual Layer DVD+R write capacity
-Blueray Disc
Among these three, I recommend DVD+/-RW although it may become a little more expensive.
If you want a laptop which can work for you for many years, I think Inspiron 1420 is preferred to Studio 15.

QUESTION: Hi Mohammed,
I have decided to go with the Inspiron 1420. As you know all the laptops come with Vista and not XP. I have seen many of my friends uninstalling vista and the going for XP. And they had to face lot of mess searching drivers for XP.
1) I dont want to unistall the vista that comes with the laptop. But I want to install the XP in another drive. Considering that I will have 250 GB hard disk and 3 GB of ram, DO you think i will have performance issues by having two operating systems on the same laptop.
2) Dell gives me 1 year warranty. But I am located in India and have to get the laptop shipped. Does the warranty cover globally or just in the US.
Thanks
Theja
Answer Hi Theja;
It is better not to install another OS on a laptop hard rive. You can do this, but it is a little complicated. It will also effect the performance, but not too much sensible.
In India, just dell 3-year warranty is considered International. But you can transfer the warranty to the country you are in.
