Laptops - Processors and Vid Adapters

Expert: Mohammad Babaee - 8/9/2008

Question
So I'm pretty much decided on a MacBook Pro but I was wondering if it's processor is and video card are as good or better than the others in its class.

Apple MacBook Pro - 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo and 256MB Nvidia 8600 GT

Toshiba Satellite - Core 2 Duo T8100 and 512MB ATI HD 3650

HP Pavilion - Core 2 Duo T9300 and 256MB Nvidia 8400 GS

Sony Vaio - Core 2 Duo T9300 and 256MB Nvidia 8400GT

Dell XPS - Core 2 Duo T7250 and 256MB Nvidia 8600 GT

What GHz are the non mac processors? Also what do the different numbers after the "T" mean? What are the numbers after Nvidia for the vid card and what is the difference between GT and GS

I've read the Toshiba is best for games with its 512MB vid card and 3GB of ram and dual hard drives. I also read that the Toshiba is really fast. But Consumer Reports has the Apple #1 with a 73 score then Toshiba and Hp with 68. Also should I get the 4GB of ram with the Apple or just stick with the 2GB.

Answer
Hi Jonathan;

Here are the answers to your questions:

1.<What GHz are the non mac processors? >: I do not understand this question.

2.<Also what do the different numbers after the "T" mean? >: This is the model number of the processor. If a CPU has a T7200 processor, you can search Inte's website for detailed spces of that series.

3.<What are the numbers after Nvidia for the vid card>:Like the processor, it is the model number.

4.<What is the difference between GT and GS>:The main difference is clocking power. The GS cards are clocked the lowest, GT is middle, and GTS has the highest clocking power. Therefore the GTS cards will perform the best. However, they also cost the most money.

2GB of RAM is enough for your work.

For the performance, search Google for benchmarks of the models you mentioned, but personally, I think the XPS is the best for gaming.
