Question
QUESTION: I am looking to purchase one of these and don't know what is needed to be wireless anywhere...Excuse my dumbness about laptops, but do they all have internet access built in or do you have to make another purchase to have access to internet anywhere....thanks-Carol

ANSWER: Hi Carol;

Usually you have 5 choices for getting connected to the internet through your laptop:

1.Dial-Up:By using a buit-in modem or an Express Card modem.
2.WLAN:By using the WLAN card in the laptop and connecting to the net from a Hot-Spot or a LAN.
3.LAN port: You can get connected using the Wired LAN connection to your home or office network which is connected to the internet.
4.GPRS:You can connect your cell phone to the laptop using cable or bluetooth and use the internet on the cell phone.
5.WWAN: You can connect to the net by inserting a SIM-Card in the laptop. This is found in some Dell XPS laptops using Verizon Sime Cards.

Today, all laptops have a WLAN card and this is the best way for getting connected.

I wish I could satisfy you.

QUESTION: This is the model number of Sony Vaio NR--VGN-NR460E/P. Is there any way you could look it up and tell me what it has and doesn't have and what I would need like the SIM card and what the expense is for that....this is a gift for daughter and she wants to be able to get on the internet wherever---probably the SIM-Card, but not familiar with any of that kind of talk...sorry so stupid about this stuff...I need it in simple words that a non-laptop person understands..thanks again-Carol

Answer
Hi again my friend;

Your question was not stupid at all!

The VGN NR460E/P has a Modem, WLAN card and wired LAN.This means your daughter can get connected everywhere.These days every where we find hotspots.A hotspot is a venue that offers Wi-Fi access to the Internet. The public can use a laptop, WiFi phone, or other suitable portable device to access the wireless connection provided.Hotspots are often found at restaurants, train stations, airports, military bases, libraries, hotels, hospitals, coffee shops, bookstores, fuel stations, department stores, supermarkets and other public places. Many universities and schools have wireless networks in their campus.

The other option is using the modem.In this way you connect using Dial-Up connection through a telephone line with a low speed.

The last option is the wired LAN which does not have use when the Wireless connection is available.If she wants to get connected in the home too, you can buy a Wireless Router for your DSL connection and she would be able to connect using her laptop form anywhere in the house with a high speed.
