About Lauren Bennett
Expertise
I am a computer science major and my dad is an Electric Engineering, so my life has revolved around computers. For as long as I can remember, I have been buying and selling computers. I tend to travel a lot, so I have always had a laptop. I have bought 5 of them for myself, and bought around 30-40 for friends and family. I have dealt with the good and the bad of various version and brand names. If you are in need of buying a laptop, feel free to contact me and I'm sure I will be able to guide you into purchasing the laptop that will be the best fit for you. I will custom build you computers for you to choose from so you can get an exact idea of what to go and buy when you do it yourself and so that you have an exact price. However, I am in the USA and am only knowledgeable about computers here in the US. I do not know about foreign currency or the quality of computer brand names outside the US.

Question
Hi again Lauren, thankyou for the incredibly fast reply.
I will be using the laptop to produce power points for specific presentations on-board "cruises", primarily in the Med.  I will be taking the Laptop on board and plugging in to the ships LCD and using a disc and a mike for the 45-min lectures. Perhaps a VCR as well.  What to spend ?  I would like to keep the Laptop price under $1000 if possible but a couple hundred either way is no-big-thing.  I have BX privileges so if I could find the right one at a military complex I could at least save on the taxes.
I would also be using the laptop for E-mail and answering Q's on the subject of Greece on allexperts as well as researching other lecture possibilities.

-----Question-----
Hi Lauren, I am Denny from Allexperts.com/GREECE ... and I am NOT very knowledgable on Laptops.  Now I find that I must buy one in order to produce some POWER POINT presentations.  I no longer have a computer. I use the computers of friends and Libraries and cyber cafes as I travel a great deal.   Soooo...What LAPTOP should I buy that will allow me to produce a power point presentation, complete with pics and special effects etc etc ?  Does a Laptop have that kind of storage capability ?  Ofcourse I do know that I will also have to get Roadrunner or Aol or some such networking access site like that.  Can you help me?  DENNY
-----Answer-----
I can definitely help you build a computer to fit your needs.  I just need to get a bit more information from you first so that I can make the best recommendation.

1. Will you be using the computer for anything beyond making PowerPoint presentations?
2. What country are you located/living in? (if US, what state?)
3. How much are you looking to spend on a new computer?

This all will determine the types of computers I recommend to best fit your needs.  As soon as you let me know, I will research the computers on the market that fit your needs and get back to you with the best purchasing options for you.

Answer
I personally recommend Dell for two reasons
1. they are the best computers and the cheapest computers
2. they have the best warranty

I would get the $749 starting cost Dell Inspiron E1505.  Here is how I would customize it

-PC Care Plus starting at $1,286
-Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5200 (1.6GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB)
-Windows Vista Home Premium
-15.4 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen WXGA+ Display with TrueLife™
-1GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHZ, 2 DIMM
-FREE! 120GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive
-8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
-128MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1300 HyperMemory™  (if you can afford it, the 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7300 TurboCache* is great)
-85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
-Intel PRO/Wireless 3945a/g (if you will be connecting to the Internet on a cruise ship, you might consider a fancier upgraded wireless card due to the large size.  however, for at home use and whatnot, the Intel one is perfect)

Using coupon code 3T1P07DB496T2Q to receive an extra 20% off this computer, I come out with $1330ish.

If you'd like to decrease the cost, you certainly don't need to get the fancy screen.  You might even consider getting one  WITHOUT True Life because that makes the screen glossy and if there is light behind you, the screen is very hard to read.  Some people love it and some people hate it.  You are probably used to looking at screens WITHOUT True Life.

Another option is to look at the Dell Inspiron E1501 with the  AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-50 as the processor.  You can customize it to be almost identical and it will also suit your needs perfectly.

A final option is a slightly smaller computer at 14.1".  When you customize that, just make sure you get 2 GB of RAM instead of 1 GB to make up for the lack of a decent video card.

You can use that 20% off coupon on all those computers I mentioned above.

Try customizing a few and get back to me with any additional questions you may have.  HP is a second option to look at, but because of the lack of a discount, they end up being more expensive and they don't offer the at home service that Dell does.
