About Lauren Bennett
Expertise
I am a computer science major and my dad is an Electric Engineering, so my life has revolved around computers. For as long as I can remember, I have been buying and selling computers. I tend to travel a lot, so I have always had a laptop. I have bought 5 of them for myself, and bought around 30-40 for friends and family. I have dealt with the good and the bad of various version and brand names. If you are in need of buying a laptop, feel free to contact me and I'm sure I will be able to guide you into purchasing the laptop that will be the best fit for you. I will custom build you computers for you to choose from so you can get an exact idea of what to go and buy when you do it yourself and so that you have an exact price. However, I am in the USA and am only knowledgeable about computers here in the US. I do not know about foreign currency or the quality of computer brand names outside the US.

Laptops - Mac or PC?

Expert: Lauren Bennett - 6/19/2007

Question
I am a wedding/portrait photographer. I am needing to buy a laptop. I am needing some advice on which to buy, Mac or PC. I have 2 friends, both major photographers who own Macs. They of course tell me there is no other way to go. At this point I don't do much on the computer besides Photoshop CS2, surfing the net, listen to music while I work, I will be burning DVD slideshows for my clients, and doing invoicing etc for my photography business. I would like to know exactly what the pros and cons are of both and what you would recommend. How much can I plan on spending. Also which one do I get the best and most out of for my money? Thank you so much for your time!

Answer
What do you have in mind of a budget? I can generally work around budgets.  Also, did you want a warranty? It costs a lot more upfront but always pays off in the end, especially a 3-4 year warranty.

Personally, I've never seen the benefit to a Mac, except that Mac people swear by them.  I asked a friend the other day why she loved her Mac.

"I love my Mac because I cannot get viruses!" -her
"Don't click on pop up ads, get a blocker, and don't open spam mail attachments.  I've never had a virus in my life" -me

And so on, with me refuting everything she said :)

Personally, I still recommend a PC.  Majority of the world functions on Windows operating systems and the switch between Mac OS and Windows OS on a Mac can be iffy and problematic at times.  My friend had so many problems she ended up selling hers and buying a PC.

Macs are more expensive than PC's for the most part.  If your Mac breaks, you take it to an Apple store to be fixed.  If your Dell breaks, a technician comes to you.  I prefer not having to give away my computer or get up out of my chair :)

I personally have a Dell laptop and I love it.  Macs do have the look factor over the PC's - they do look nice.  I'm also a fan of the Vista operating system - the start menu and sidebar are great.

Let me know your price range/budget as well as about the warranty and I'll look around and build both a PC & a Mac and give you specs and prices and we'll go from there.
