About Lauren Bennett Expertise I am a computer science major and my dad is an Electric Engineering, so my life has revolved around computers. For as long as I can remember, I have been buying and selling computers. I tend to travel a lot, so I have always had a laptop. I have bought 5 of them for myself, and bought around 30-40 for friends and family. I have dealt with the good and the bad of various version and brand names. If you are in need of buying a laptop, feel free to contact me and I'm sure I will be able to guide you into purchasing the laptop that will be the best fit for you. I will custom build you computers for you to choose from so you can get an exact idea of what to go and buy when you do it yourself and so that you have an exact price. However, I am in the USA and am only knowledgeable about computers here in the US. I do not know about foreign currency or the quality of computer brand names outside the US.
Experience B.S. in Computer Science. Buying and selling for years. Assisting friends/family.
Question QUESTION: Which lap top is better ?, i will be using it for business looking up parts, records, pic's of jobs before and after, bill paying, internet surfing, entertainment, mobil and home. i'm thinking of 1000.00 or so and years of service. need your help.
ANSWER: i would defintely go with Dell. They have a much better warranty, higher quality of customer service (which may just be because it is easier to get what you want), higher quality computers, and better deals. I've done extensive research (aka my dissertation to graduate) on the quality of almost all of the computer brand names out there, Dell and IBM being two of them.
If you'd like, I can help you build a notebook that would best fit your needs and your budget.
Do you have a preference between Vista and XP? Do you have a preference with size? (14", 15" and 17" are most common). How much will you be carrying/traveling with this notebook?
Let me know and I'll try to build you the notebook that would best suit you!
Thanks!
Lauren

QUESTION: Lauren getting back to you, I'm not sure which is best Vista or XP, as to my old laptop has XP which took a hit in the screen can't see it any more. But as far as size I have to say 15" and mobility carrying / traveling 70% of the time. I run a small business and the computer would be used as I said in the first ouestion page. What notebook best fits my needs? Thank-you Kevin, Help!!!!
Answer The main thing that makes Dell and HP different is their warranty. With HP, you package up your computer, get it picked up at your door by UPS or Fed Ex or DHL, someone fixes it, and then ships it back to your door. It is gone probably a bout a week. With Dell, a technician comes to you (house, business, etc) within 48 hours and fixes it on-site.
If you decide to go with Dell...
# Use code 05SF554JGRJZSF to save $500 off any $1,499.00+ Dell Inspiron notebook. (valid 5/3/2007 7:00:00 AM - 5/10/2007 6:00:00 AM)
# Use code 3WBWBT01KSXPCS to save $300 off any $999.00+ Dell Inspiron notebook. (valid 5/3/2007 7:00:00 AM - 5/10/2007 6:00:00 AM)
I'll probably have new coupons if those expire.
I'd look into the Dell Inspiron E1505. It is their best computer - it has won a lot of awards. Your best bet would be to go with the PC Care Bundle for 3 or 4 years (depending on your needs and budget). Go with the cheapest one each time so you have more customization options. Keep in mind that discounts wont' be taken off until after you have built it and added it to your cart.
I would go with the Intel Core 2 Duo @ 1.60 GHz (or 1.83 GHz if you have the money). The 1 GB of RAM @ 667 Mhz. Windows Vista Home Premium. The hard drive size is up to you, but you can alawys buy an external one too. I'd recommend a DVD burner to back stuff up, but that can also be done on an external hard drive or flash drive as well. The default 256 MB video card is fine (I have it) and it is on sale. You'll then want the 9 cell battery and right now, all the wireless cards are the same. To get the benefit of the fancy N Wireless, you'd need a fancy N router as well. I just have a normal G router in my basement and I get onto it fine from the second floor :).
If you are needing a router too, I'd go with Belkin or D-Link. People have been liking those the best lately. Personally, I have Belkin. People have been having problems with Linksys lately.
If you want to check out HP as well and comapre the two, I would look at the dv6000t series.
And the battle between XP and Vista... the two only sell Vista so luckily for you, you don't have to make a choice! I have Vista and I haven't really had any problems. The only non-compatible thing was a USB Wireless Adapter for my desktop.... versions 2-4 had a Vista driver to download and version 1 didn't have one yet. Beyond that, everything has worked with Vista... everything. Microsoft is trying to phase XP out by 2009 or so and Vista will be taking over.
Let me know if you have any other questions or need an updated coupon after tomorrow!
