About Lauren Bennett
Expertise
I am a computer science major and my dad is an Electric Engineering, so my life has revolved around computers. For as long as I can remember, I have been buying and selling computers. I tend to travel a lot, so I have always had a laptop. I have bought 5 of them for myself, and bought around 30-40 for friends and family. I have dealt with the good and the bad of various version and brand names. If you are in need of buying a laptop, feel free to contact me and I'm sure I will be able to guide you into purchasing the laptop that will be the best fit for you. I will custom build you computers for you to choose from so you can get an exact idea of what to go and buy when you do it yourself and so that you have an exact price. However, I am in the USA and am only knowledgeable about computers here in the US. I do not know about foreign currency or the quality of computer brand names outside the US.

Answer
Personally I have a cheap laser printer because I don't ever have to print in color and I have to print a lot.  My laser printer has pretty cheap toners that run 5,000 pages before needing replaced.  My toner costs about the same as the average color cartridge which lasts much less.

Personally I have the Samsung ML-2010 (I got it for $50 on sale at Staples).

If you'd like to go inkjet, Canon has the cheapest ink and are decent printers.  HP and Dell make good printers but the ink is pretty pricey.

It's hard to pick one or the other as no inkjet printers are really good.  They print slow, you can't highlight when you print (ink smears), and the ink is expensive.  But you can print in color.

Laser printers lack the color printing options (unless you go super super expensive) and the toners are a bit pricey, but they print 10 times as much on one toner as on one cartridge and print much much faster.  The toner also doesn't smear so you can highlight what you print.

I personally love my Samsung ML-2010 and haven't had any problems with it.  I don't think I'll ever go back to ink jet printer.  However, ink jet printers are quite popular among college kids and you can print at a college on a laser printer for $0.07 (on average) per page.  That's probably how much it costs normally, when you factor in wear on the printer, paper, and ink/toner.

So really, it is just a personal preference.  Just make sure you look at the costs of buying ink/toner for the printer before buying (in comparison to other similar printers).

My old ink jet Canon had black ink that cost $10.  My old roommates Dell printer had black ink that was $44.  The printer may be cheaper, but the ink may cost way more and add up down the line.  College kids tent to print a lot!

A cable for a printer is just a USB cable.  They look like this:

Let me know if you have any questions when you hit up your search!  Newegg.com is a great place for reviews as well as cnet.com :)
