Question
I have recently booked a trip to MGM Grand and paid extra to stay in the west wing. It is a smaller room and I only see that I will get a better bed and tv. Can you tell me if the room location is better, why is it considered upgraded?

Answer
Linda,

The West Wing King (wwk) rooms are actually the refurbished structure of the old Marina motel. As part of the property expansion a few years ago, MGM hooked on and enveloped the older motel and just made it part of the overall complex.

The wwk rooms are smaller than the tower rooms... as a matter of fact, the west wing only offers king size beds, because the rooms aren't big enough to fit two queens. However, they make up for their lack of size with some nice amenities, and the fact that the rooms were recently renovated.

I've heard the west wing compared to New York boutique hotels. They're small but trendy. The bathrooms are very modern with chrome fixtures and fluorescent lighting and tile floors. The bedroom has a Bose personal stereo and CD player, plush linens, urban decor and thick matress. You should note, however, the wwk rooms do not have bathtubs (only showers) and the toilet is separated from the vanity only by a frosted glass door, and there is no door between the bathroom and the bedroom, so there is very little privacy when using the facilities.

The location of the west wing is somewhat more convenient to the strip, but less convenient to the pool, the restaurants and the lobby. One nice thing about the wwk location is that you have a different elevator bank toward the front of the hotel, and there's hardly ever a crowd waiting for the elevator. Most of the time, there's a huge crowd of people waiting for the elevators for the grand tower rooms. But I wouldn't say the location is a real advantage over the tower - you still have to walk a bit no matter where you stay simply because the hotel is so huge.

Calling the west wing an upgrade is really a personal preference judgement. Some people like the intimate boutique feel of the room and the comfy bed. Some like the decor. Some like the easy strip access and absence of crowds. If you don't mind the smaller room, lack of window (very few of their rooms have any window or view), lack of bathtub and compact bathroom, then it is kind of nice to get away from the crowds in the tower and lobby area and escape to your own little corner of the hotel. But if spaciousness is your top concern, then you might want to switch back to the tower.

Hope that helps!
